Ed Miliband is not the first person hit by an egg in Southampton. In 1992 John Major was targeted by a Portsmouth student while he campaigned in Hedge End. The student was fined £100 and ordered to pay Mr Major £10 as compensation.
For those wondering about egg's origins, fairly sure it wasn't free range but nothing can take away from cracking result in Southampton...From @Ed_Miliband on Twitter:

While being interviewed by Meridian's Political Correspondent Phil Hornby some decided to egg Labour Leader Ed Miliband. More soon.
Labour leader Ed Milliband is in Southampton after the party gained control of the City.
Labour gained 11 seats leaving them with 30 of the authority's 48 seats, the Tories lost 10 councillors.
The Labour leader is to visit Southampton following a landslide victory in the local council elections. The Tories were ousted from power in the city election last night, following a bitter dispute with the local unions over council cuts. Labour now has 30 seats in comparison to the Tories 16.
