Essex Police has announced plans to scrap it's mounted section to save around £600,000.

The Force says due to cuts in funding from the Government and other financial pressures it has to save more than £42.2 million by 2014.

The mounted section consists of nine officers, eight horses and two other police staff.

If the move does go ahead the unit would go in September.

The Force says it's consulting with affected staff at the moment.

Police horses only returned to the streets of Essex in 2008 after an absence of nine years.
