Charity store targeted in raid

A charity shop in Sussex was "ransacked" on Friday night, causing thousands of pounds worth of damages and losses, managers say.

Thieves broke into the Age UK store in Lewes and ripped out the charity’s safe, which was bolted to the wall and floor.

They then went through each office, breaking open filing cabinets, stealing five laptop computers, smashing windows and even stealing pennies from a stamp tin.

This year has been incredibly difficult for the charity - we have already had to cut back a number of vital services for older people due to reductions in funding.

"This just makes our difficult financial situation even worse. As a precaution we have had to change the locks at our other premises throughout the county which is now causing further disruption to our services.

"We would like to especially thank staff and volunteers who are helping to sort out this mess and apologise to our clients for the disruption this may be causing.”
