Suspended sentence for benefits fraud

A 55-year-old woman has been sentenced to three months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to failing to notify authorities in a change of circumstances. It resulted in an overpayment to agencies totalling over £28k.

Mrs Jennifer Ibrahim-Kori of Gibbons Road in Sittingbourne appeared before Maidstone Crown Court following a joint investigation by Swale Borough Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.

Mrs Ibrahim-Kori had not notified the authorities of the change of circumstance during the period of 3 August 2005 through to 7 May 2009. Swale Borough Council will now seek recovery of the overpaid benefit.
