A Sussex Police spokesman said that the body had not yet been formally identified but it was believed to be that of Ms Stevens, of Baltimore Court, The Drive, Hove.
Detective Chief Inspector Ian Pollard, of Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team who is leading the investigation, said:
"The 49-year-old man has today been released from custody on bail and our investigation into how Mrs Stevens died continues.
There are still a number of lines of inquiry we are following."

A 49-year-old man arrested on suspicion of the murder of an 88-year-old woman in Hove has been bailed.
Detectives from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team this afternoon (Saturday 5 January) released the man from custody on police bail until 19 February pending further enquiries.
The woman, who has not yet been formally identified but is believed to be Evelyn Stevens, was found at around 7am on Thursday 3 January outside her flat in Baltimore Court, The Drive, Hove.
A post mortem revealed that she suffered injuries consistent with a fall from height.
A post mortem was carried out on the body of Mrs Stevens yesterday. The results revealed injuries consistent with a fall from height. The circumstances as to how she came to her death remain under investigation.
Shortly before 7am on Thursday 3 January the body of Mrs Stevens was found outside her flat in Baltimore Court, The Drive. Detectives from Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team continue to investigate the cause of her death.
Police are appealing for anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area of Baltimore Court before 7am on Thursday 3 January to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting Operation Atlantic or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Detectives investigating the death of a 88-year-old woman in Hove have been given extra time to question a man in custody. Magistrates granted officers extra time, meaning a 49-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder can be held by police until tonight (Saturday 5 January).

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was found dead outside Baltimore Court in The Drive, Hove, this morning. Detectives investigating the death of an 88-year-old woman arrested a 49-year-old local man in Brighton this afternoon.
Detective Chief Inspector Claire Pridgeon, of Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: "Detectives are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death of the woman and I would appeal for anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in The Drive before 7am to contact police."
Detectives remain at the scene in The Drive this afternoon. A post mortem is due to be held late tomorrow afternoon.
