Dozens of the 127 proposed marine conservation zones were judged by Government advisers to be at high risk, but wildlife groups were left dismayed when it emerged they would not be immediately protected.

by Charlotte WilkinsCampaigners from across the South are urging the Government to do more to protect the marine life in our seas. A quarter of a million people signed a petition which was handed in to Downing Street this afternoon.
One hundred and twenty-seven areas off the English coast were recommended to the Government as being in need of protection but only 31 of those are currently under consideration, though the rest may be included later.
Along the south coast 17 zones were proposed but only 6 are being considered. None of the zones around the Isle of Wight have been selected. Charlotte Wilkins explains.
