Bridge boost for Southampton

Six of Southampton’s bridges will benefit from investment of £4.19 million thanks to a successful bid by the city council for a share of the Department for Transport’s Local Pinch Point Fund.

Grant to help transport improvement

An award of £2.4 million was made from the £170 million national fund, which the Southampton will match, to carry out maintenance and improvement works on Western Approach rail bridge, Northam River Bridge, Central Bridge, Redbridge Flyover and Millbrook Flyover and Vicarage Bridge.

The bridges provide vital links into and out of the city, not only for commuters, but for cruise passengers and dock traffic as well. The fund was set up to support economic growth by tackling log jams on the local highway network. .

Specifically the fund is aimed at schemes that can be delivered quickly with immediate impact, and Southampton’s is one of the first 10 schemes to be approved. Work is expected to be complete on the six bridges by August 2015 and should cause only minimal impact to users.
