Strong winds and heavy rain forecast tonight
Heavy rain and strong winds will hit the south tonight. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for the South East telling residents to be aware of the potential for flooding and travel disruption. Heavy rain is set to hit overnight and into the morning.
Forecasters said the area could expect rain, heavy at times, from the south west to spread eastwards to the rest of southern England through the night. It also warned of gales that might develop along some of the coast, producing gusts of 50 to 60mph.
Gusts of up to 55mph on the south coast
Strong winds have been felt on the south coast, including at Newhaven in East Sussex. Forecaster John Hutchinson, from the Press Association's weather division MeteoGroup, said gusts of up to 55mph were expected in parts of southern England.
He said: 'I think 55mph is the sort of thing to blow objects around and cause the odd tree to fall down. People who are out and about should take care but the worst of it seems to be over.'
