Motorists relieved as 1 lane opens on M2 after sinkhole

One lane has now been opened on the M2 after a 15ft sinkhole appeared in the central reservation.

The motorway had been closed since Tuesday but the hard shoulder was opened this morning at 6am for motorists to use.

Pea-shingle is being used to fill the sinkhole, which appeared between Sittingbourne and Faversham.

The two main lanes are still shut and delays are to be expected.

Motorway hole causes commuter chaos

A huge sinkhole on the M2 in north Kent means one of the south east's busiest roads remains shut this evening - more than 24 hours after it was first discovered. Highways surveyors at the scene say they have no idea when they can fully reopen the motorway.

It's meant long tailbacks and delays for drivers in the Faversham and Sittingbourne areas. Our reporter Nashreen Issa talks to Kevin Bown from the Highways Agency and Philip Gomm from the RAC Foundation.

M2 sinkhole - diversion information

Engineers were joined on site by the emergency services including Kent Fire & Rescue Service. Cameras have been and will continue to be used to investigate the extent and nature of the hole.

The site was closely monitored overnight, whilst equipment and materials are being organised and deployed to site ready for our contractors to start work as soon as it is safe to do so. A clearly signed diversion is in place via the A249, the M20, the A20, the A252, and the A251.

Highways Agency update on the motorway sinkhole

A section of the M2 in Kent remains closed between J5 and J6 in both directions this morning for safety reasons as work continues to investigate what caused a hole to open up in the central reservation yesterday. Lanes on the M2 will only be reopened to traffic as soon it is safe to do so.

Drivers heading to and from Dover are advised to use the M20. The Highways Agency and its contractors are working hard with partners, including the emergency services and Kent County Council to minimise disruption as much as possible.

The hole, between junction five for Sittingbourne and junction six for Faversham, is approximately five metres long, two metres wide, and about five metres deep (15x6.5x15ft) and was reported yesterday afternoon by Highways Agency contractors.
