Eleven rescued from flat fire in Southampton

Eleven people were rescued after a fire ripped through a Southampton flat early this morning.

Residents 'retreated to balconies' during Southampton fire

Officer in charge of the incident, Station Manager Paul Riddell, said: "On arrival crews were met with a severe and rapidly developing fire in a top floor flat where multiple rescues were required and aggressive firefighting undertaken.

"Numerous families did a fantastic job of getting to a place of fresh air after they realised they could not escape via the communal corridor. Residents had retreated to their balconies after blocking the bottom of their front doors with towels and blankets to stop smoke entering their properties."

Eleven people rescued from Southampton flat fire

Eleven people were rescued when a fire tore through a Southampton flat early this morning.

Sixty firefighers attended the fire in a four storey block of flats tin York Close which started just after 2am.

On arrival crews were met with a severe fire in a top floor flat with 11 people needing to be rescued.

The fire was contained to the flat of origin and communal area.

The people were evacuated and handed over to south central ambulance service, one of which was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
