"Reading is always delighted to welcome the Queen"

Rob Wilson has given this statement on the Queen's official visit next month to open Reading Station.

Reading Station is part of securing a bright economic future for the town, so it is only fitting that Her Majesty the Queen should officially open it 25 years after she visited to open the previous station.

When I met the Duke of Edinburgh at a Buckingham Palace reception last year I did ask him whether he would be coming back for a return visit after all the intervening years, to which he jokingly replied; “You don’t want us again!” Well Reading is always delighted to welcome the Queen and the Duke and it will be a great honour and privilege for the town to do so again.

I can see this being a very big day for Reading where we will all come together and celebrate.”

The Queen will officially open the redeveloped Reading railway station next month.

An £850 million Network Rail scheme has seen major improvement on the station, including new platforms and entrances.

The work on the station started in 2011 and most of the major works are now complete.

It will be the second time the Queen has carried out an opening ceremony at Reading Station.

Her previous visit was to mark the construction of the Brunel Arcade in the 1980s.
