Hundreds of thousands of children in the South are living in families with debt problems. The research by The Children's Society and StepChange Debt Charity showed more than 180,000 households are failing to keep up with household bills and loan repayments. Across the region families owe £807 million.

Report reveals extent of debt for families across south

According to a report by The Children's Society and Step Change Debt, each family is struggling behind on payments - by an average of £4500. Across the region, families owe a total of eight hundred and seven million pounds in bills and loans.

The charities say more needs to be done to help people. But the Government says the study exaggerates the extent of the problem. Malcolm Shaw reports

Families in South East owe £807m debt

Hundreds of thousands of children in the South East are living in families with debt problems according to research commissioned by two charities.

They say 180,000 households are failing to keep up with everyday bills and loan repayments. And across the region, families owe £807,000,000.

More than a 160,000 children across the west country are living in families with debt problems. New research out today shows more than 1 in 10 families in the region are failing to keep up with household bills and loan repayments. It also shows that a third of families have had to borrow money in the last year to pay for essentials for their children. There are calls today for the government to offer parents more support.
