A Norwegian sailor taking part in Cowes Week was seriously injured resulting in an urgent call for help to the local RNLI inshore lifeboat.

The yacht, the Asiss, was just a mile out into the Solent when one of the other three crew members alerted Solent Coastguards that the 56 year-old skipper had been thrown so heavily across the cockpit that he went through one of the two steering wheels.

The yacht was returned to shore and the skipper was transported to St Mary's Hospital in Newport.
