An investigation has begun into the death of a 14-month-old girl who was reported to have drowned in the bath.

An investigation has been launched into the death of a 14-month-old girl who was reported to have drowned in the bath.

The girl, who has not been identified, was in the care of her mother when she died, according to police.

Officers were called by staff at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said : "Thames Valley Police is currently investigating the circumstances around the death of a child that occurred in Grove, Wantage.

"The death was reported to police by staff of the John Radcliffe Hospital. The 14-month-old girl was in the care of her mother at the time of her death. It was reported that she drowned in the bath."

Oxfordshire County Council spokesman Paul Smith said the child was involved with social services but the toddler was not in council care.

No arrests have been made at this time and a Home Office inquest into the child's death will be opened and adjourned shortly.
