A verdict of accidental death has been recorded in the case of Christopher Bailey, who was found lying on a weights bench on May 19 this year by his landlord in Mill Close, Portslade.
An inquest in Brighton has heard Mr Bailey, who suffered a broken neck, was three times over the drink-drive limit and had been smoking cannabis.
An inquest is to resume into the death of a fitness fan who died after apparently becoming trapped beneath weight-training equipment as he worked out in a garage in East Sussex.
Christopher Bailey was found lying on a weights bench on May 19 this year by his landlord, Oliver Steer, at the house they shared in Mill Close, Portslade.
Mr Steer, 57, said he had been drinking with Mr Bailey until the early hours that day.
He thought the 28 year old had been dead several hours before he found him.
He said: "I found him on the bench with the bar across his chest.
"I tried to wake him but I knew he was dead. I had to try to lift the weight off him, which wasn't easy because it was so heavy."
The inquest hearing is to be held at Brighton Coroner's Court.
