It is believed that a coffee machine was the cause of a fire which has destroyed part of the Fleet Services petrol station complex on the M3.
It took more than fifty firefighters most of last night to fight the flames which it was feared would spread to a hotel and petrol station.
The fire is thought to have started in the KFC restaurant at the site - on the southbound side of the motorway at 10:30pm. A dozen staff were evacuated but no-one was injured. Most of the building has been destroyed.
Firefighters say that if the fire had happened at any other time of day then lives could have been lost. Richard Slee reports.
