Search for man after kayak overturns in river

Surrey Police is carrying out a search of the River Wey for a man whose kayak overturned earlier this afternoon.

Officers were called to Millmead by the Guildford Borough Council offices following reports that a man had gone into the water after his kayak capsized near the weir.

Officers are working with colleagues from the fire service to try and find the man.

The police helicopter and ambulance crews are also in attendance.

We have a large number of officers out looking for this man alongside a number of fire crews. The man was spotted in the water by several members of the public and was clearly in difficulty due to the extremely strong current. We are doing everything we can to try and find him. We are urging members of the public that if they do see him, not to try and go in after him but to call 999 straightaway.

Kent coast kayak challenge

A group of workmates from Folkestone have set themselves an incredible challenge - a 100 kilometre walk; a 10k run and a row all the way round the Kent coast. They aim to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

David Johns joined them as they prepare for their epic journey. He spoke to fundraisers Luke Quilter and Anna Smirnova.
