Henry the 1st laid the foundation to Reading Abbey in 1121 - but now it's ruins lie amongst modern structures. Now, a manuscript has been unveiled revealing a little more into how monks lived their lives at the abbey.
An important part of Reading’s history is set to be unveiled on February 28, at the town's Record Office. The original manuscript of Reading Abbey was most probably created between 1340 and 1350.
The manuscript has been examined by reputable experts such as Professor Brian Kemp of the University of Reading, who is convinced of its authenticity and of its value as new evidence for the Abbey’s history.
This piece of Reading’s history is the only known Reading Abbey manuscript remaining in private hands and was sold to the Berkshire Record Office for the below valuation price of £36000.
