PC Tracey Searle said "People who nip across the track to take a shortcut and get to the other side rather than use the correct means of crossing the railway are risking their lives. Trespass may not sound like a serious offence but it can be a major safety hazard."

"Not only are you at risk of being struck by a train but also of coming into contact with the live third rail, which powers trains across the south, and carries 750 volts of electricity and remains switched on 24 hours a day, seven days a week."

It comes on the same day Network Rail has launched a campaign to stop young men running across lines after 17 near misses over the last year.

The family of a motorcyclist who died following a crash on a Hampshire road have paid tribute to him, saying " he was one of those rare people who touched the hearts of everyone he came into contact with."

Fifty year old Bernard Ryder from Southampton came off his bike while riding along the A35 at Holmsley on Saturday. Those closest to him say he was “easy going, kind, unassuming, he was also a talented musician and passionate about motorbikes. He will be missed hugely by everyone who knew him.”
