Stop! Newts!

Roadworks in Rye Credit: Malcolm Shaw

Roadworks on a major route through East Sussex have been halted after the discovery of rare newts. Work has been going on to repair and resurface the A259 near Rye but a Great Crested Newt has been discovered in a ditch beside the road.

It's a protected species and must be relocated before the work can continue. The owner of a nearby farm shop says he's suffered a 30% drop in trade since the work started. Peter Anthony says he can't afford to pay all the staff at his business, Salts Farm Shop.

He says he can't understand why the newts weren't looked for earlier. It's feared the completion of the roadworks may be postponed for up to a year.
