Pensioners lose fight to keep home and day centre

Video. The elderly residents of a care home - and day care centre - said an emotional goodbye, today, to the places they had called home. Despite a long campaign and a 3,500 signature petition the doors were closed for good.

The council said it would cost £1.5m to modernise the buildings - money they couldn't afford. Mel Bloor talked to Alwyne Jeffries, centre user; Councillor Rachel Eden, Reading Borough Council; and Lu Cozma, campaigner.

Meals on Wheels service is 'a lifeline'

It's something many of us take for granted - popping out to get some food, and then coming home and making a meal.

But it's not always so straightforward for our older population. It's thought that around 1.3 million people over the age of 65 in the UK are suffering from malnutrition.

Lauren Hall has been speaking to one couple who say they'd go hungry if it wasn't for their local Meals on Wheels service.
