Examining how dogs understand humans

Video. How often do you talk to your dog or wonder what they are thinking? Well, the University of Portsmouth has launched a brand new project to examine a dog's ability to understand humans.

It is the first centre of its kind in the UK and now owners of all breeds are being encouraged to use it, to find out how clever man's best friend really is. Divya Kohli went along to find out and spoke to Dr Juliane Kaminski.

How clever are man's best friend?

A new study by the University of Portsmouth is looking at how clever dogs really are.

The Dog Cognition at the university have launched the project to examine a dog's ability to understand humans.

It is the first centre of its kind in the UK, and now owners of all breeds are being encouraged to use it.

Dogs of any gender, age or breed can take part in the study, where researchers play and set them tasks. The research is purely observational and the dogs will be rewarded with food or play.

To take part, dog owners are asked to answer a few questions about their pet first.
