A daredevil claims he has set another world record for being the first man to cross the Solent by sailing in a giant pumpkin.

Mr Galitzine set sail from Stokes Bay in Gosport at around 9am this morning, and landed at Wooton Creak Yacht Club on the Isle of Wight. The journey took 1 hour 56 minutes.

Galitzine sat inside the giant vegetable and travelled several miles across one of the busiest shipping channels in the world.

The pumpkin was fitted with a small outboard motor which enabled Dmitri to travel at about 1 or 2 knots.

Pumpkin man's Guiness World Record attempt

A daredevil claims he has set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest 100 metres on water in a pumpkin.

Dmitri Galitzine completed the unusual task in 2 minutes.

His record attempt was recorded by independent adjudicators, and will be examined later, Guinness World Records said.

It had said Mr Galitzine would have to complete the 100m paddle within three minutes to set a new record.

A man is attempting to cross one of the busiest shipping channels in the world in a giant hollowed out pumpkin.

Contemporary artist Dmitri Galitzine has enlisted the help of marine entrepreneur Jonny Boys and his Trafalgar Wharf team to help him cross the Solent.

Galitzine will sit inside the vegetable and travel from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight.

The pumpkin will be fitted with a small outboard motor and will travel at a speed of around 1 or 2 knots.

Galitzine said, "Despite weighing 500kg, giant pumpkins are naturally buoyant and have a thick waterproof exterior.

"My biggest challenge are the strong tides across the Solent."

100 stone prize pumpkin

When a farmer from Dorset planted a small seed back in April, little did he dream of the monster that it would grow into.

Mark Baggs' prize pumpkin eventually tipped the scales at 1,520lbs - that's 689 kilograms, and over 100 stone!

Over the weekend, at a pumpkin festival near Southampton, it was officially declared as the heaviest pumpkin ever grown in this country. Martin Dowse went to see it.

The record for the world's heaviest pumpkin was set on 15 October 2011 in Ontario, Canada with one weighing in at 1,818lb and 5oz (824.86kg).
