The threat to thousands of jobs at Heathrow was lifted tonight after the parent company of British Airways (BA) was given approval to buy loss making British Midland. The deal, which is subject to a number of regulations, should be completed next month.
Today's decision was taken by the European Competition Commission. Rivals say it is unfair because BA will now have more than half the slots at Heathrow. BA welcomed the move.
