'We're glad to be home' Kent couple stranded in Egypt tell tales of 'inadequate searches and bribes'

A couple who have just returned to Kent, after spending three days grounded in the Egyptian holiday resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh, say security there was a disgrace.

Marc Standen and his girlfriend Emily Alfeo say they saw inadequate searches of vehicles and bags, and heard stories of airport officials taking bribes to fast-track passengers.

As John Ryall reports, they say they're glad to be home at Westgate-on-Sea after the worry and frustration of the last week.

The other interviewee in John Ryall's report is Sean Tipton from ABTA.

The British Government has issued a travel advisory on journeys to parts of Egypt.

On its website The Foreign & Commonwealth Office says it has '... worked with the Egyptian authorities and air carriers to put special security measures in place to permit travellers in Sharm el Sheikh to return by air, whether as scheduled at the end of their stay or before that if they wish. Outbound flights from the UK to Sharm el Sheikh remain suspended.

'Flights from Sharm el Sheikh to the UK resumed on 6 November 2015. British nationals affected by this should contact their tour operators or carriers on their travel plans. The additional security measures include permitting passengers to carry hand baggage only and transporting hold luggage separately. We are working with the airlines to ensure there are suitable arrangements in place to reunite passengers with their belongings as soon as possible.

'We are not raising the threat level in the resort. The above advice applies only to air travel to and from Sharm el Sheikh.'
