Four people were taken to hospital after several vehicles collided on a stretch of motorway early today.
Emergency crews were called to the southbound stretch of the M23 at Junction 9 near Gatwick at around 4.12am following the crash, Sussex Police said.
Three vehicles were involved in the collision. The carriageway was immediately closed and is expected to remain shut until later this morning while forensic examinations take place, a police spokesman said.
The conditions of those caught up in the accident is not known.
Lane three on the M23 Northbound is also closed between Junction 10 at Crawley and Junction 9 to Gatwick Airport. This is due to another accident and there is debris on the road, so drivers are being urged to use caution.
