The family of a retired British Airways pilot killed in a crash in Sussex say they are very proud of the fact that he steered his plane away from nearby homes. The inquest into the death of Alan Weald opens today.

Statement from pilot's family

The family of Alan Weal who managed to steer his plane clear of residential areas after it was involved in a mid-air collision near Shoreham Airport have paid tribute to him.

"His extensive flying experience helped avert a tragedy greater than that so sharply felt by his family; his mum, wife, two daughters, three grandchildren and his many friends."
