Dr Phillip Lee, the MP for Bracknell, has suggested people with unhealthy lifestyles should pay for their prescriptions if they develop conditions like diabetes. The Tory MP, who is also a practising GP, said the rising cost of so-called 'lifestyle diseases' would bankrupt the NHS.
He said people needed to take more responsibility for their own health. Dr Lee also warned that those in their late 60s and early 70s were less 'stoical' than their parents when it came to dealing with pain.
