Paul Scharner went straight into the starting line-up on his return to Wigan for their key Barclays Premier League clash with fellow strugglers Southampton.
The Austrian, who previously played for the Latics between 2006 and 2010, rejoined the club on loan from Hamburg on Thursday and replaced Roman Golobart in defence while Ronnie Stam came in for Emmerson Boyce, who injured his hamstring in Tuesday's draw with Stoke.
Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino made one change from the team narrowly beaten by Manchester United in midweek, Luke Shaw returning to the side in place of Danny Fox, so captain Adam Lallana had to settle for a place on the bench again.
