Consultant transplant physician Dr Paul Harden, from Oxford, says there's an 'anxiety about donation' and a lot of misconceptions about the risks involved. Every day 3 people will die waiting for a transplant, due to the desperate shortage of donor organs.
There are currently ten thousand people waiting for a transplant, and none of them know whether they will get the call in time. We'll be exploring the issue of organ donation in our From the Heart series this week.
While 90% of people believe donating an organ is the right thing to do - only 30% are signed up to the organ donor register.
During our week-long campaign - 9,055 people signed up to the register in our region - compared to just 818 during the same period in 2012.
