Two Kent Police officers have been cleared of charges of allowing a man who'd been arrested to die in front of them. PCs Maurice Leigh and PC Neil Bowdery both denied misconduct in public office after the death of Colin Holt in Gillingham.
This was a tragedy for Mr Holt and his family. However, this has been a hugely traumatic experience for these two officers; two officers who were trying to their best in a very hectic, violent and fast moving incident.
In my view questions must now be asked of the mental health professionals charged with the care and treatment of Mr Holt, and the wider provision of mental health care; too often police officers are left to pick up the pieces for what appear to be the failings of others... We should remember that police officers are not mental health professionals.”
