Southampton sailor 22-year-old Jack Bouttell is on course to be the first British sailor to ever win the Rookie Division of the 1938 mile La Solitaire du Figaro race. It started at Roscoff in France and finishes in Dieppe.
He and six other British sailors are among a fleet of 39 boats taking part in the competition. The sailors are on the 520-mile final leg of the race. The fleet left the French coast earlier today racing across the Channel to Wolf Rock off the coast of Cornwall. The event is expected to end tomorrow.
The final ranking is based on the accumulated time across all four legs of the race which began on 2nd June 2013.
Sam Goodchild an alumni of the Artemis Academy on the Isle of Wight is 13th overall, of those from Southampton: Nick Cherry is 19th, Ed Hill from Southampton is in 21st place (the top rookie in this fourth leg), and Jack Bouttell is in 23rd place overall (2nd rookie and still top rookie overall).
