A woman has died despite a major rescue operation to free her from a coastal cave in Dorset. Coasguards, Swanage and St Albans RNLI were called to Tilly Whim Caves near Swanage at 3.20pm yesterday to reports of a woman trapped in a sea cave.
Rescue teams could either enter the cave underwater or through a blowhole at the roof of the cave. With the light failing and high tide approaching, the St Albans' Cliff Technician entered the cave through the blow hole. But after entering, it became apparent that the woman had sadly succumbed.
A Coastguard spokesperson said: 'The difficult decision was taken that the recovery of the body at that point was too dangerous to undertake. Naturally at this time the team's thoughts are with the deceased person's family and friends.'
