Prisoner escapes from custody while receiving medical treatment

At 00.40am on 27 July, Sussex Police were informed that a prisoner, Jamie Stephen Halifax, had escaped from prison. This occurred while he was at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Eastern Road, Brighton, where he had been receiving medical treatment. On 5June, Halifax, 25, was convicted of robbery and possessing an offensive weapon and had been on remand at HMP Lewes awaiting sentence on a date to be fixed when he escaped.

Officers attended andlaunched an extensive search, but at this time Halifax is still at large. He isdescribed as white, 5'4"-5'8", of slim build and with shaven brownhair. He was wearing grey tracksuit bottoms, a light blue t-shirt and whitetrainers.

Halifax, who has alarge tattoo spelling "Lauren" on his neck, was last seen runningalong Bristol Gate on the east side of the hospital.

Anyone seeing Halifax,or who may know of his whereabouts, is asked not to approach him but to call Sussex Police, either by dialling 999 if immediately in view, by phoning 101 orby,quoting serial 79 of 27/14
