Council and University representatives have begun talks on turning the former Reading Prison into a new cultural centre.

The Ministry of Justice decided that the prison was no longer fit for purpose in 2013.

Last week the group of experts visited the Victorian site and discussed potential ideas for development.

Proposed plans include new housing, space for business, leisure and cultural education.

The prison and surrounding ruins of Reading Abbey are of enormous cultural and historic significance, not just for Reading but internationally.

This is a unique opportunity to create a new town centre community for Reading with a rich historic identity, complementing the plans for the surrounding heritage quarter.”
