New measure to protect police assaulted on duty

Every year hundreds of police officers in our region are assaulted while on duty. Some suffer serious injuries, others are left with mental scars.

Figures show that: In Hampshire in 2015 to 2016 - there were 993 assaults on police officers while on duty - a fifth of those were verbal assaults. While in Sussex there were 917 assaults on police officers.

Now, Sussex Police has launched a new plan to make sure that staff who are victims of violence get the same help as members of the public. Malcolm Shaw has more.
