Most of the families affected by last night's fire in Northfleet, Kent, have now returned to their homes. A number of properties were evacuated due to the large black smoke plume and heat affecting their properties. Around 30 people went to the refuge centre set up in Cygnet Leisure Centre. At the height of the fire, around 35 firefighters, six fire engines, a bulk water carrier, command support unit and a height vehicle were fighting the blaze, in a derelict leisure centre in Nelson Road.
Crew manager Jason Hill, said: "Our firefighters worked exceptionally hard throughout the night to bring the blaze under control. Sadly a dog had to be put to sleep and a woman from the refuge centre was taken to hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation. Fire crews are revisiting the area this morning. The cause of the blaze is not yet known but is being investigated."
