A man has died during the Clipper Round The World Race in the Southern Ocean. Simon Speirs from Bristol was swept overboard while changing a sail in rough seas. The race organised in Gosport began in August.
The 60 year old from Bristol was rescued by crew but never regained consciousness. The team is being supported by the race office. The incident occurred on Day 18 in Race 3 of the 13 stage Clipper Race as the fleet was racing from South Africa to Australia. A full investigation will now be carried out.
Simon Speirs had been a member of the crew since the race start in the UK on August 20th. He had over 40 years dinghy experience. Race organisers say our "deepest thoughts are with his family and all those who knew him"
