Mexico on alert

Heavy rains from a tropical depression have flooded large areas in southern Mexico prompting authorities to declare an orange alert.

Thousands of families have been evacuated in the states of Chiapas, Tabasco and Oaxaca.

Mexican authorities are evacuating over 5000 residents in the southern state of Tabasco, where days of rain have led to the overflowing of major rivers in the region, local media reported.

Navy and Army officials began the evacuation process on Saturday in twelve communities - near the state capital of Villahermosa - all at serious risk of flooding.

According to local media, authorities are conducting controlled releases of water from rivers and reserves across the region, but forecasts of continued rain have locals concerned.

In the Oaxacan municipality of Juchitan de Zaragoza 25,000 residents have been affected by the overflowing of local Los Perros river.

The town has been battered by meters-deep flood waters.

At least 1500 residents have been transfered to shelters, according to local reports.

More than 100,000 residents of southern Mexico have been reported affected and hundreds of homes damaged.
