Red hot competition

The 5th Pyronale fireworks world championship opened with a bang at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin on Friday.

The two-day competition features the work of six of the world's best display choreographers who are competing for the golden Pyronale trophy.

For the first time this year, a German team is taking part - facing stiff competition from teams from Slovakia, Greece, Italy, Switzerland and South Korea.

The German firework company Nico opened the first night with a spectacular pyrotechnic feast - to the delight of the home crowd.

Next to light up the skies over the Olympic Stadium was Privatex Pyro from Slovakia.

The Pyronale has been running since 2006 on the first weekend in September.

About 60-thousand visitors were expected to come and see the colourful show.
