Residents flee

Hundreds of people were on Sunday leaving Pakistan's flood-hit Sindh province, about 200 miles from the Arabian Sea, after the area was inundated by new flooding.

Local residents of the town of Dadu near the Indus River were seen waiting for large trucks to take them and some of their possessions to safety.

Elsewhere in Sindh, Pakistan Navy boats patrolled the water-covered streets of Khairpur Nathan Shah looking to rescue as many as possible.

"Khairpur Nathan Shah city is completely submerged. Nothing left there. We just grabbed our children and fled from there, what else could we do? No government representative has as yet visited to make enquiries," said local man, Fida Hussain.

Flood victims were seen wading through water almost up to their waists with whatever they could carry of their belongings.

Over 1,600 people have died since the flooding began in late July.

Millions have been driven from their homes and the waters are still swamping rich agricultural land in the southern provinces of Sindh and Punjab.

According to the United Nations the disaster has left a fifth of the country underwater and affected more than 17 million people.

The army, along with international aid agencies, are struggling to reach the some 8 million people who are still in need of emergency assistance.
