Tsunami warning as quake strikes near Solomon Islands

A tsunami warning has been issued for Solomon Islands region in the Pacific Ocean after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck near the islands.

A tsunami warning was issued for the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and surrounding areas, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. A tsunami watch was in effect for Fiji, Australia, Indonesia, Guam and nearby areas.

Earthquake recorded near Indian island group

An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale has been recorded off the Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal.

The islands, which belong to India, lie close to the coast of Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia and were part of the area devastated by a massive tsunami in 2004.

Missing jet 'likely to have flown into Indian Ocean'

Officials looking into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, with 239 people aboard, believe it is likely the plane flew into the southern Indian Ocean, a source close to the investigation said today.

"The working assumption is that it went south, and furthermore that it went to the southern end of that corridor," said the source, referring to a search area stretching from west of Indonesia to the Indian Ocean west of Australia.

All efforts are being made to reduce the search area for flight MH370, Malaysian officials have said.

The entire search area being covered has expanded to 2.24 million square nautical miles.

China and Kazakhstan are leading the northern corridor search, while Australia and Indonesia are focusing on the operation in the southern corridor.

The north and south corridors have been split into seven quadrants in the search.

Search for MH370 extended to two vast corridors

The search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight has been widened again with some 26 countries now involved in efforts to locate the plane and the 239 passengers on board.

Satellite data suggests it could be anywhere in either of two vast corridors that arc north from Thailand to the border of Kazakhstan, with the other south from Indonesia to the Indian Ocean west of Australia.

Police first visited missing pilots' homes on March 9

Police first visited the homes of flight MH370's pilots a day after the flight went missing, the Malaysian government authorities have said.

The statement, issued by the ministry of transport, contradicted Malaysia's police chief who said Saturday was the first time police had searched their homes.

Twenty-six countries are now involved in the search with Malaysian authorities requesting radar and satellite information as well as land, sea and aerial support.

Other updates on day nine of the search include:

  • Three French aviation officials arrived to share "their expertise and knowledge based on their experience from the search for Air France Flight 447"
  • The royal Malaysian navy and the air force will be deployed in the southern corridor today
  • Countries involved in the search include: Malaysia, Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, China, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Turkmenistan, UAE, UK, US, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam
