South Africa is celebrating the 94th birthday of former president Nelson Mandela. He is unlikely to attend any public celebrations, but was pictured yesterday with ex-US president Bill Clinton at his home in Qunu.

Sir Alex Ferguson sings Happy Birthday to Mandela

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has sung Happy Birthday to Nelson Mandela, who turns 94 today.

Ferguson, seen here with officials from the KwaZulu-Natal province, is with United on a pre-season tour of South Africa. He said of Mandela:

"I have met him a few times now, and I think every time you meet him you're sort of in awe of him ... his presence, his personality exudes all around you."

South Africans to complete community work to celebrate Mandela's birthday

South Africans all over the country celebrate Nelson Mandela's 94th birthday today.

Many will do charity work as part of what has become known as "Mandela Day" - citizens are asked to do 67 minutes of community work to reflect Mandela's 67 years of service to the country.
