The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it is investigating alleged racist behaviour by a home supporter during the Chelsea-Manchester United game at Stamford Bridge last night.
A photograph published in the national press appeared to show a fan making a 'monkey' gesture during the Blues' Capital One Cup fourth-round win.
Officials at Chelsea earlier confirmed the club has launched its own investigation into the incident.
Chelsea Football Club has not contacted police over an allegedly racist gesture made by one of the club's fans to a Manchester United player during last night's match at Stamford Bridge, a Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed.
We are aware of the picture but we have not received a complaint.
Chelsea Football Club can confirm we are investigating an incident involving a member of the crowd at last night's game against Manchester United.
The club will be examining all available footage and asks anyone who can identify the individual to contact the club.
Chelsea FC is committed to removing all forms of discrimination and if we have sufficient evidence we will take the strongest possible action, including supporting criminal prosecution."
