Syrian state television has reported a "terrorist explosion" near a hotel and government-run labour union in capital Damascus, according to Reuters.

Syrian rebels attack airbase before opposition conference

Syrian rebel fighters have said they launched an attack on Taftanaz military airport in the northern province of Idlib, cutting off Syria's biggest city Aleppo from the capital Damascus.

The Syrian government has used Taftanaz to fuel helicopter gunships and fighter jets that have bombarded nearby villages. The incident comes a day before an opposition conference begins in Qatar.

Syrian rebels attacked a military airport in the country' north in a push to cut off the country's biggest city Aleppo from the capital Damascus, and secure a strategic north-south corridor.

Despite ragged command-and-control and few heavy weapons, the rebels have gained control over the rural north and border crossings to Turkey after 19 months of conflict and now seek to isolate Aleppo from Assad's power fulcrum in Damascus.

Footage shows Syrian rebels 'liberating airbase'

A video posted on YouTube claims to show Syrian rebels launching rockets towards the military airport in Taftanaz.

One of the rebels is heard to say, "operation to liberate the military airbase in Taftanaz".

Taftanaz lies near the highway between the capital Damascus and the northern city of Aleppo, a major front in the civil war.
