General Allen and Jill Kelley exchanged 'flirtatious' emails
A senior official has described the tone of the 20,000 plus emails exchanged between General John Allen and Tampa socialite Jill Kelley as "flirtatious", according to the Associated Press.
It was not immediately clear whether General John Allen was flirting with Mrs Kelley, or whether he was the recipient of flirtatious emails.
Jill Kelley sparked an FBI investigation that exposed Petraeus' affair with Paula Broadwell, and prompted his resignation.
Petraeus 'used terrorist trick' to conceal emails
General Petraeus and his mistress Paula Broadwell used a trick popular with terrorist organisations such as al-Qaeda to conceal their email correspondence, a senior law enforcement official told The Associated Press.
The pair shared a private email account, and instead of sending each other emails, they composed messages and left them in a draft folder, or in an electronic 'dropbox.'
The other person would then log into the account and respond in a similar fashion, leaving the message in drafts. This method enabled them to communicate without creating an email trail, which would be easy to trace.
Petraeus 'shocked mistress suspected of sending threatening emails'
CIA director David Petraeus was shocked to learn that his mistress Paula Broadwell was suspected of sending threatening emails to another woman, warning her to stay away from him, former staff members and friends told the Associated Press.
General Petraeus told associates his relationship with the second woman, Tampa socialite Jill Kelley, was platonic, though his lover, Paula Broadwell, apparently saw her as a romantic rival.
Mrs Kelley began receiving harassing emails in May, according to two federal law enforcement officials. Mrs Kelley reported the matter, eventually triggering the investigation that led Gen Petraeus to resign as head of the intelligence agency.
FBI agents traced the alleged cyber harassment to Ms Broadwell, the officials said, and discovered she was exchanging intimate messages with a private gmail account. Further investigation revealed the account belonged to Gen Petraeus.
