Lionel Messi scores record-equalling 85th goal in 2012

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has equalled the all-time record for the number of goals scored in one calendar year.

His 85th goal of 2012, scored for Barcelona against Real Betis, matched Gerd Müller's milestone set in 1972.

Messi's 85 goals in 66 matches included:

  • 55 goals in 36 matches in La Liga
  • 3 goals in 7 Copa del Rey matches
  • 13 goals in 12 Champions League matches
  • 2 goals in 2 Super Cup matches
  • 12 goals in 9 matches for Argentina

Müller's record was set in 1972 when he played 60 games for club and country.
