The 20-year-old was walking with friends in the Blue Mountains near Sydney when he slipped over the edge of Wentworth Falls at noon yesterday, New South Wales Police said.
Police and paramedics were called and the man was declared dead at the scene, but high winds prevented a helicopter from retrieving his body.
Rescue crews travelled to the area by foot today to assist with a second attempt to recover the body.
A report will be prepared for the coroner, police said.
