Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp has been described as "the kindest, sweetest human being" and "an angel on earth who will be sorely missed" in a tribute from her publicists.
– Sarit Tomlinson, MD of Capacity Relations
We can confirm that Reeva Steenkamp has passed away. We are in communication with people on the scene, please wait for official statements, as there is too much speculation at this moment in time. We will provide further information as soon as we are able to provide accurate information as to what transpired.
Our thoughts and prayers go to the Steenkamp family, who have asked to have their privacy respected during this difficult time, everyone is simply devastated. She was the kindest, sweetest human being; an angel on earth who will be sorely missed.
A friend of Reeva Steenkamp has broken down in tears as she made an emotional tribute to the South African model outside Oscar Pistorius' home where she was shot dead.
Mashadi Motsogi, a fellow model, told the South African Press Association she heard news of the death on Twitter and attempted in vain to call the Olympic amputee athlete.
– Mashadi Motsogi
It was only on my way to campus when I saw journalists come in front of the estate, when I realised that it might be true, that she might be dead. I know Oscar stays here. When I called here, he did not reply. He did not answer my call.
Miss Motsogi said she has "lost a friend." She described Miss Steenkamp as a "friendly person, always willing to help other people" and said she looked to the model for advice.
She also said Miss Steenkamp's death in a secure complex did not make sense.
– Mashadi Motsogi
Look, security here is safe. We moved to this area for security reasons. It does not make sense to me that my friend was shot, mistaken for an intruder.
Oscar Pistorius' father has said his son is "sad" following the death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Speaking to SABC radio, Henke Pistorius said he knows "nothing" about the fatal shooting incident which has seen his son charged with murder.
– Henke Pistorius
It will be extremely obnoxious and rude to speculate. I don't know the facts. If anyone makes a statement, it will have to be Oscar. He's sad at the moment.
Brigadier Denise Beukes has distanced South Africa police from reports that fears of a burglary at the home of Oscar Pistorius may have led to this morning's fatal shooting.
Oscar Pistorius' application for bail will be opposed by South African police later today, a police spokesperson has confirmed.
South African police were "very surprised" by the suggestion Reeva Steenkamp may have been mistaken for a burglar before she was shot dead at the home of Oscar Pistorius, a spokeswoman has said.
Brigadier Denise Beukes told reporters near the scene: "These allegations did not come from us."
