The Office for National Statistics said the amount spend in the food sector increased by 3.4% in April 2013 compared with the same month last year.
The same figure increased by 2.1% in April compared to May this year.
"Feedback from retailers suggested that promotions on summer ranges led to this increase in sales," the ONS added.
Retail sales increased by 2.1% from April to May 2013, the Office for National Statistics said.
Data indicated that a 3.5% increase in food sales volumes was the main factor behind the overall rise.
Retail sales volumes increased by 1.9% in May compared to the same period last year, the Office for National Statistics said today.
The figures are based on a monthly survey of 5,000 British retailers.
